A dress is decided at the waistband
A dress either sits at the waist or it does not, and no amount of styling repairs the difference. Every shirred panel in the collection is worn for a full working day before approval, and every elastic waist is checked for recovery after the first wash. Plaid is cut so the check runs continuously across the side seam and the zip rather than meeting by accident at the hip, and every hem is measured against the shoe it will be worn with. The knitwear is worked in a gauge that keeps its width through a season, then washed twice and measured flat, because a stripe that stretches into a different pattern by February is a pattern error, not a wearer error.
